While studying Fine Arts at Sydney University, May went on a 6 week field trip to Italy in 1984, and stayed on for a few extra weeks. This was her first overseas experience, and Rome the first city she visited outside Australia at the age of 19.
She went all around Italy, visiting galleries, churches, palazzos, and temples, and students took turns to give presentations, as well as drive the three minibuses.
Since then, she has been back to Italy many times, and later lived in Rome for 6 months, and studied Italian. However, the 1984 field trip will always be special as it cemented her love for art history and art practice. She took lots of photos, especially of Rome, Venice's beautiful canals, and Italy's "sleeping beauty," Mantua. This beautiful city was actually declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2008.
Painting, life drawing, ceramics, printmaking, and photography courses, would follow.
May’s paintings are available for purchase as original works, or as limited edition archival prints. Contact May/see Store.
